Solutions For Elders

Creative solutions, creative results.

Health care for seniors has surely changed drastically! I had not needed a hospital since 1985 when I had a Hysterectomy and have been in good health ever since. Recently, I did something extremely foolish and landed in a hospital.  I had given in to the glorious cravings of my favorite childhood cookies, when I found them at Sam's club, packaged in a very large quantity of one hundred cookies. This is the foolish part. I sat down and ate over half that box of cookies. Yes, I did! Then washed it down with a thirty-two ounce green slush! Yep, You guessed it! I got very sick and very dizzy, which lasted from late evening on into late afternoon the next day.

I went by ambulance to the hospital and I honestly thought I had a stomach flu or a virus and was pretty dehydrated as well.

I felt secure going to a Catholic hospital and I surely felt safe with the ambulance. Let me just stop here and say this. I have worked in medical all my life and the Ambulance Has always been such an integral part of saving lives. But, now, they are literally a hospital on wheels! Those guys are the best of the very best and I personally think they are even better than many, many doctors. Besides that, they have excellent bedside manner.  There would be a lot of DOA's if not for their terrific skills.  Let's not forget they are also adept at fighting fires! Can we possibly be  more fortunate?

When I was in the emergency department (it is no longer called the emergency  room, it is actually a whole department now.) What I learned while there was, that everyone over sixty- five years of age needs to be admitted for at least a two day stay. Why? Because Medicare pays well for this, no questions asked.

Another thing I learned is that any type of dizziness , whether from infection, dehydration, glucose overload or whatever can be admitted as a stroke. Additionally, if they admit a possible stroke patient, they can keep them and do multiple cat scans, MRI's, clot scans, stroke scans etc.   The more scan the better. They can falsify your records and say you are a former alcoholic, drug abuser, or both and use that as a reason for treatments not working, what is more they can assimilate A fib by giving full doses of Benadryl and Valium at the same time as this combination  will often cause tachycardia in most patients. Plus, This results of Tachycardia also  assimilates A-fib as well, in many cases. How about that, another diagnosis!  Now if they lie on the intake and say you are a drug addict or alcoholic or both, the possibilities are endless. Woo- Hoo! You can be a real money maker. See Medicare does not know these things. Thus, you become a cash cow from the moment you come through those doors of the emergency department.

The Elderly are perfect victims for these hospitals to milk the Medicare system. Especially in hospitals owned by private equity firms. Many of these private equity firms are owned by Foreign Doctors or groups. Many from India.

These firms try to remove themselves from all liability by contracting with management companies to hire doctors, nurses and staff. They attempt to remove themselves from the hospital practices, At least they think they do.

Once admitted and a patient on a med floor, they do not help you to a shower because they can have someone from Rehabilitation come and watch you take a "French Bath" and that is considered therapeutic. They actually bill for that as Rehabilitation. The patient is more than willing because they want and need a bath so badly.  The management company thinks of every way to monetize anything staff might do or see. Yes, I said management company, These companies do all the hiring, firing and make up all the rules that earn them money. They care about you alright, only as unlimited possibilities to line their pockets!

  • The other Elder money maker is, they send you to their Rehabilitation facility which they claim you need so badly, This facility is their Nursing home on the same campus. What a unique way to fill the nursing homes. Once you go there nothing says you will go home again. It is a possibility you will one day leave in a body bag. All this when you consider the Ativan cocktails, the neglect and let us not forget the end of life therapy. The Medicare system can really milked in these facilities.

Have you started to see the big picture? These firms are " fleecing" Medicare and using the Elderly as  sacrificial lambs to do so.  At the same time they are pumping elderly patients full of drugs so they cannot figure out what is really going on. After all, we are so dispensable. While they are also helping to thin the herd.

The days of suing for malpractice against doctors and  hospital facilities are over unless the Elder has actually died. Yes, but we can still sue for neglect, wrongful diagnoses and sue  the Health insurance for Elder Abuse when they deny physical therapy, diabetic supplies, counseling  and other services then call and want to know if they can help any further. You will need to file complaints file, turn them in to Medicare for fraud when they charge for what never happens. and just turn their world upside down, then take their money in a  lawsuit. We don't have to let them get away with it. Follow  our site and learn what you can do, how, to do it, and become your own advocate. That is the key! Becoming your own advocate.

In addition, lawyers need to know what is going on. They have tied your hands, well here is a way to cut the binds that tie you up. Investigators learn how to get what you need for the litigator, you will learn how you need to prepare him beyond a reasonable doubt

Knowledge is absolutely worthless unless it is shared. Then it becomes invaluable. I have a reputation for NOT playing nice with bad  guys, and I never sugar coat anything. I am not a bakery.

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Beverly Vierra and I am a retired Elder abuse/ wrongful death investigator. Before becoming an investigator, I was a surveyor and a QMRP for MRDD. Preceding that I was a Nurse and went back to school to earn my Masters degree in health care administration. I had a total of forty five years in my career from start to retirement.

This is all completely my knowledge, my experiences and my own techniques and opinions. These things have worked for me in my career and still do. I want to share some pointers with Elders.

When it comes to health care  always ask the Doctor these questions.

1. What is my diagnosis?

2. Why are we doing this ,test, procedure. x-ray, etc.?

3. How many of these tests or  Procedures have I had?

4. Who benefits? who benefits monetarily?

5. What are my surroundings?

It is like having a sonogram to see if you have cancer. It tells something is unusual but, it does  not tell if  is cancer. There had to be something unusual in the exam in the first place. to request a sonogram. It is one of those tests that sort of sneak past insurance companies. That particular test is probably not necessary but it can also cover for a practitioner who is not sure of themselves. You know, better safe than sorry approach.

6. Always, always and always ask questions and  write down the answers if you have to.

When asked  why you are writing everything down just answer " I want to be sure I do what I am suppose to." This may make some providers edgy. If it does you may be seeing the wrong provider.

7. Always bring someone with you to your medical appointment even in the exam room. Your spouse, your daughter, grandchild, best friend, cousin, whatever. Just don't go alone. You may need a witness later. Plus, providers tend to be on much better behavior. Providers, even Doctors tend to back down when there is someone in the room who is a visitor and coherent.

8. Never,  ever, ever and never be alone in the hospital. I don't care if you have to beg cousin Myrtle, hire the lady down the street, threaten to divorce your spouse or cut your kids out of your will. Never be alone in the hospital. You will get much better care and  you will not get run over by hospitalists and/or Doctors who want to give you harmful medicine , send you to a nursing facility or any other  questionable practice.

I am not trying to make hospitals and Doctors out to be all shady and harmful.  I really am not. However, there are just too many hospitals being sold to Private equity groups who really do NOT have your medical interests at heart. Believe me when I tell you those people who were so trusting many times end up in the morgue and they cannot tell their story. Times have changed!

9. If once discharged, you have a bad feeling about the hospital , you know, just too many red flags. Go to your computer . Find out who owns that hospital. Check and see how many times they have been sued.  That will give you answers. Do a background check on the Hospitalist Doctor. Your findings may be cause for concern and you may want a second opinion. Lastly be sure to ALWAYS get your hospital record!  We hope you won't need it but it is better to be prepared, just in case.

Let's continue on with my personal experience:

My first week admitted to the hospital  was a bit of a blur. I remember waking up in ICU and wondering what was next. I did not have to wonder too long because I was not there fir the entire day. Then, all I remember is going to a medical floor and being so cold and just wanting to sleep. I could not stay awake no matter how hard I tried.

However, my daughter and son were with me each day and whatever I missed they knew about. The most I remember about the first week was that I was so cold. But, with four or five heart medications in my IV daily It is no wonder I was so cold.

I remember, the room was not the cleanest and the bed was a mattress with a fitted sheet and wedge of foam for a pillow. Thankfully, my husband brought my pillow from home and my son found the blanket warmer where he got warm bath towels for me to cover with.

I had several Cat scans,  Clot scans. Stroke scan  and an MRI. They were waiting for my brain to swell and it did not, or it did swell some and then went back down, I never found out for sure exactly what that scenario was.. The doctors seemed disappointed and confused because my brain never did swell or bleed or whatever..  I remember waking up and seeing all these foreign Doctors standing at the foot of my bed. My honest first thought was what are we all doing here? They were all far east Indian and I had no idea I was in a hospital and they were Doctors. My next awakening memory was, they were like vultures standing around my bed waiting for my brain to swell or bleed and they appeared disappointed when neither happened.

I was given a combination of antibiotics, potassium, magnesium and fluids intravenously for nine days straight. I had Statins and heart medications injected intramuscularly daily and nightly  I was given a unit of Insulin after meals and Glipizide daily along with aspirin.

They seemed more concerned with the A-fib diagnosis than the stroke. The fact is they did not even treat the Hypertension at all, not did they ever discuss it at any time. I had a daily visit of foreign doctors around my bed, I even had a failed attempt of a neurologist on a TelePrompTer, then an actual virtual visit by said neurologist on the Teleprompter a couple of days before I was released.  Next the American Doctor who spoke fluent English, and  was a pediatrician came in my room and ordered me to take five gulps of water at every Television commercial. Now I would have been happy to do this except. I was not aware of the television and  if you want me to gulp water, then please don't administer drugs to make me sleep

Since my insurance would not pay for  hospital Rehab ,after submitting multiple requests the Doctor decided  I needed to go to their nursing home on campus for rehab. My children told her in no uncertain terms that would not happen, not now, not ever! So she  decided to give me Metformin for diabetes. Once again my children told her No, it was too controversial. Needless to say, I think  she was ready to get rid of me.

The Doctors then  decided  I needed some form of rehab, since I had a stroke. That is when, a very nice gentleman came to my room and got me up and had me walk.  This I did three times Next I had a very confused woman come to my room and ask me to wiggle my toes and point my left foot, then my right foot and lift each foot independently. Now if I could walk to the end of the hall and back, I certainly did not need to exhibit strength in my feet. That was backwards.  I did not see her again for a few days. This woman  decided I needed intense rehab.  My insurance company disagreed. She then decided she was going to train me to take a French bath and dress myself. Complete with brushing teeth and combing my hair.  I thought this was also moot since I had taken two showers and dressed myself in the days previous to her visit.,

When I complained there was sugar on my meal tray and I am suppose to be on a diabetic diet  I jokingly said " "boy, the Joint commission should eat in this cafeteria! The charge Nurse came into my room and explained how a glucose monitor worked and I needed to go on a diet. She failed to tell me what diet. I was discharged the very next day with NO instructions from a doctor or no follow up from a nurse. Just that afternoon a nurse's aid came into my room with a wheelchair  and said " time to go" and I was discharged with a bundle of papers and a glucose monitor. No notice, no information, just good bye! I felt that was really strange. I later found out this hospital is owned by a private equity group.  This is another private Equity firm that buys catholic hospitals and continues to make money from the preceding owner's good name. It takes years for people to put together the scam they are running. This hospital was no more catholic than a Jewish Synagogue!  They just took advantage of the unknowing good Catholics who had faith in the predecessors who ran the hospital along with their good reputation. It makes you wonder how these greedy so called doctors sleep at night. Typical Private Equity Firm.

You should never  make decisions in your own interest unless they are informed decisions. It is the same way  with consent. Make absolutely sure you only give informed consent. Why? because that is the biggest loophole in malpractice lawsuits, You gave consent. They told you the procedure and some of the risks. Did you question them? In depth? without doing that you are giving a carte blanche to do as they like.

Elder Healthcare Today:

Since I recently had to visit our local hospital, I was amazed at all the changes. What I knew as Healthcare and duty to care was a completely different aspect today. Especially for patients on Medicare! My observations were shocking and caused me to record notes so I would not be mistaken. Since I was fairly semi-conscious for the first five days.In my career first, as a Nurse, then as a Healthcare administrator, and finally as an Elder abuse investigator, I was not at all prepared for the antics, lack of professionalism, plus general disregard for patient safety, well-being, and duty to care. This had to be a joke! Allow me to explain what shocked me.   I will recount these instances in steps as they occurred, to reduce the confusion. This hospital appears to be the remnants of a former facility that performed well above the present rules, regulations, and expectations of Medicaid/ Medicare.   This was a private hospital with religious affiliations. It was run properly and was a wonderful asset to the community.Unfortunately, like many smaller private hospitals, it became increasingly harder to keep the doors open. What, with insurance companies limiting payment amounts for procedures and so many non-pays, the task became increasingly difficult. The hospital finally was sold to a private equity company.  As we all know private equity companies are experts , when it comes to making top dollar and giving the least amount of services. They are also known for "padding the bill", Diagnosing conditions they are able to simulate with medications, Siphoning off Medicare with all seniors over the age of sixty-five, keeping hospitals short staffed, cutting back on supplies ,such as cleaning materials, and of course all hiring is done through a sister company of staffing .In short, they are the elite of screwing over Medicare, Insurance companies and patients.

These companies do just enough to pass the very least standards.    They are usually  run by third world country doctor groups and could care less about anyone's health.  These of course are my own personal observations  and opinions as an elder care investigator.  If you ever have time  you need to look up how these firms operate. Unfortunately, most of them buy out religiously affiliated hospitals and operate on that religious groups good reputation and good name for several years while fleecing the coffers. They make their money back plus a great  profit in very few short years.

Believe me when I say "the mafia could have learned a lot  from them!"   Because of the above reasons you should always, always get a copy of your bill. Scrutinize it carefully. How many times  did they charge for the same test? How many times did they charge for insulin and how much? Did they charge for the rehabilitation you did not receive? TelePrompTer visits are one of their favorite, sneaky charges. How many times did you talk to a Doctor on a TelePrompTer? How many are listed on your bill?  My favorite is the charge of over four hundred dollars to watch you dress, wash and brush your teeth, it is called self addressing ADL's. The other one is when someone comes in and puts a gait belt on you and you walk to the window and back, that is four hundred and fifteen dollars! Then of course they want to send you to their nursing facility which coincidentally provides " Rehab". This is especially if you are over sixty-five. There is a better chance they will keep you after they give you an Adderall cocktail daily.  Thus, they are able to fill up the beds at their long term care facility! What a duel edged sword, they have. All this and End of life therapy sessions to bill Medicare. What a Golden egg you have become!

I was Diagnosed with A-Fib and Type ll Diabetes. This I know because a distant voice in the Emergency Department yelled this information out to me.

My mind was working when I was able to stay awake for a few moments so I did acquire this knowledge. Later I wondered if they were able to give this diagnosis to many others who were dehydrated and given fifty milligrams of Benadryl, thereby inducing Tachycardia to assimilate A-fib. How convenient. Except I knew better. I did not have A-fib nor did I ever have any reason to suspect A-fib nor ever have any possible symptoms of A-fib.

Naturally when I was discharged I was profoundly confused.  There was no nurse to come and go over my Diagnosis with me no counseling on Diabetes, no follow up visits with Doctors, nothing! No Diabetes training, no doctor appointments, nothing. I had a dietician come to my room once while I was still sleepy and she basically told me to eat fruit and vegetables with my meals. That's it!

I was dumbfounded. just a nurse's aid with a wheel chair. That was absolutely an early discharge without any instructions. Nothing addressing my supposed A-fib diagnosis, nothing. No normal discharge at all. Basically they threw me out of the hospital.  It was like "Times up! You got to go! That qualifies as a wrongful discharge.

To say I was surprised is an understatement.  She gave me a folder and I had no idea what was in it. Three months later I opened that folder and found Doctor's appointments that were never mentioned to me.

I was still sleeping right after breakfast and could barely function. I was discharged with one thousand dollars worth of prescriptions that of course kept me in a semi comatose state. After I finally started to vomit from taking these drugs I started throwing them away. I did keep the glipizide and the statin, because they made sense. As a former nurse I thankfully was able to distinguish that fact.

They did send me home with a walker . I just kept looking at that and after a couple of weeks when I could force myself to stay awake I started to walk in the house without the walker. It was easier to navigate my own body than try to navigate that walker. Especially,  since the drugs made me walk into walls and miss stairs.  I battled dizziness, blurriness and light headedness all at the same time. The drugs kept me constantly in a fog.  I was determined more than ever I was going to recover or die trying. I felt I had nothing to lose. The hospital sent me home with no instruction, no rehabilitation, no Doctor appointments. Nothing! I honestly thought they sent me home to die!  It sure seemed that was the real underlying reason. Along with that stark reality came depression. I thought several times about ending my own life. However , I knew that was a cowardly thing to put my children and grandchildren through. I spent my days in a recliner with nothing to do but think about all this. I was getting more and more depressed about the events at the hospital and I was slowly able to put all the factors together.

Those factor made me think and think. I eventually made up my mind that if God did not take me when I had the stroke, he must not be finished with me. I was determined I was going to help myself get better and figure out what it was he wanted me to do. I began to pray more often, I prayed fervently, I prayed for strength and clarity if it was his will. It must have indeed been his will because I was suddenly able  to piece together the importance of each event.

I was given absolutely NO in home rehabilitation. Yet, the hospitalist said I would receive in home rehab.  They called me and just said the doctor would have to prescribe rehab. I never heard from them again. The hospital claimed my insurance company would not approve it. So, their answer was their nursing home or get discharged. My kids made it clear I was not going to a nursing home, so they sent me home!  I wish I had been alert enough at the time to know the game they were playing.  They keep you drugged and try to pull all these tricks. Modern medicine has become a toolbox for criminals with various medical degrees.

I went home and truly struggled for the first ten weeks or so. Between debilitation and the medications plus the knowledge I suddenly had horrible diseases, that took their toll, I finally decided my children did not in anyway deserve to lose their mother to suicide. I could never wish that on my worst enemy. what a living hell that would be for my children. I could not do that.

I admit I talked to God a whole lot more than I ever did. I finally started realizing what really happened and how all these so called medical professionals were not all  professional at all. It made me angry and the angrier I got the harder I worked to regain my energy and health.

About the third month I had been forcing myself to go to the grocery store a few times a week and held onto the cart while I walked the entire store. This was my therapy to walk.  I began researching. I had my husband put my computer in the loving room and I researched everything I could on stroke recovery, stroke exercises, diabetes, Hypertension and improving health.

I had no Doctor, so the insurance company assigned me one . when I finally went to him two months after the stroke, he had a  medical spa! Well, heck I did not need Botox. Are you kidding me?  At my age it sure as heck would not help anyway!  Now we are in august and I still do not know how to control this disease.

I called the insurance company and got a nurse practitioner who was accepting patients. That was another month till that appointment. Now, I was getting concerned. I finally just took a shot in the dark. I cut out all sugar, Salt, Fats, caffeine and most meats. That meant I only had Tuna and chicken breasts or turkey breast. I realized I was stabbing in the dark but I did know obesity contributes to Diabetes so I figured I had nothing to lose but ugly fat. I went on a plant based diet.

I took control of my diet and it was really difficult. I had blurry vision, and dizziness still and had to be careful with a knife or the stove. I sat on a stool at the kitchen island and prepared my so called meals. It was hit and miss and a shot in the dark.  a few times I had blood glucose of 65  but I ate a diabetic cookie and that helped, I lost lots of weight. My weight went from 165 to 135 and I was starting to feel I needed to get some real advice. I started researching. I called the school of holistic medicine. ( they were a God send) and checked with the Mayo clinic. I searched the Diabetes association and the American Heart Association and studied every website on stroke that is out there. in November  I started walking backwards in the house to help with my balance. I did aerobic exercises. My husband put bars on the wall in the spare bedroom to give me something to grab when exercising. I went to more and more stores pushed that shopping cart all over. Soon I could do that with just one hand and alternated.

In September I went to the new provider and was full of hope and promise that I would finally  have a professional to guide me on this journey.  But, atlas she only kept prescribing drugs for my hypertension and increased my glipizide. Now I was really walking smack into walls and could barely see as well as itching all over! When I mentioned this she stated it was the Diabetes that caused that.

Well, Here I am on November 2023 and  I am still considered a Diabetic although I now have it well under control and I can see just fine and am not dizzy in any way, plus I do not itch at all. In fact my balance now has improved about 80 % thanks to the John Hopkins institute and the you tube physical therapy exercises for  balance from Doctor Doug Weiss DPT  and his proprioceptive Rehab  at the Neoplastic institute. I studied everything I could find about the brain and Neuroplasticity, Neuro spasticity and progress from strokes.

After four months of being an experiment with drugs I finally requested a holistic practitioner after the NP I had, just  told me either do as she said or she would just have to refer me to a specialist. ( like that was suppose to be a threat). She would have been doing me a favor since she obviously did not know what she was doing.  But, guess what I would do after she said that? File a complaint,  and put her license in question.  Again, I had a provider who gave no direction , no explanations, no advice. "Just, here, take these pills. Oh, they don't work quite right? Here, take some others" When asked what side effects the drugs might have, she lied and said none.

She was making her money on writing prescriptions.

So once again I went back to the insurance company and got a holistic practitioner.

Meanwhile I got some great services from the insurance company. ( that is meant to be sarcastic)

They sent a Doctor on a home visit who seemed to be resentful of  being here.  Then he would not answer any questions about diabetes. He was a waste. No wonder they gave me a seventy five dollar visa card for consenting to this visit! Think about that! If you have to be paid to allow a Doctor to visit you ( especially since you currently have no decent Doctor) there is something terribly wrong with this whole picture.

Then, they sent me 21 meals in one box and 21 meals in another full of sugar and salt. Yea that is what you feed a patient with Diabetes and Hypertension!  How did they even think remotely they were doing something that would increase your health?

The second month  ( February) of seeing my new practitioner She took me off the glipizide, in May she took me off the metoprolol. I had a low enough A1C when I was going to the first NP but I guess she liked the kickbacks from drugs too much.  She just kept writing scripts

At any rate I am controlling my diabetes and hypertension with diet, exercise, supplements and lifestyle. I am happy to say I am currently free of medications and still check my glucose twice daily and my blood pressure two to three times a day. Once my A!C stays below 5.4 for a year I will be declared non diabetic.

The same insurance company recently sent me a free Fitbit watch and program. I am guessing if you survive that long they give in and help a little.

My same  insurance company recently decided I needed a therapist! Can you believe that?  And the therapist has gotten me a behavioral therapist coach. So I am receiving therapy twice a week! Where in hell was that service one year ago?  I am not about to refuse it. God alone knows after all I have been through I need all the help I can get in becoming mentally healthy once more!

Next, they sent me a free Fitbit watch and program ten months after the stroke!   Although I must have had a great psyche to survive it all and get this far.  They also gave me twenty five dollars a quarter in credit to buy health products from their catalog, I bought a blood pressure monitor which when it arrived it did not have a charger, so it was good for two weeks and that was it. They also refysed to pay for my diabetic testing supplies.

All in all the insurance company, denied my rehabilitation after a stroke ( which I sorely needed) and instead sent me a Doctor with terrible bedside manner and no knowledge, three weeks of meals full of sugar and salt, a therapist  and coach one year after I rehabbed myself along with a Fitbit watch and program, and a blood pressure monitor that was only good for two weeks and no diabetic testing supplies I suppose they thought I didn't die so they would help a little. What a depressing mess that is.

I need to tell that insurance company, Thanks a lot, for absolutely nothing!

It is now currently November and  it has been one hell of a year and half! A year and half out of my life. I thought I was going to die and I can't  even begin to describe the stress and anxiety from this past year. It was all so unnecessary. What if I had not had a career in medicine? what if I had  been someone who knew nothing and just drank the Kool aid and shut up?   I really would have been dead! Today's healthcare industry would have killed me and it would have been a crime gone undetected.  I lived for a reason , to help others to realize they can live also!  we need to stand up for ourselves and fight back. That is what God spared me for, I know that now.

Healthcare means not what others give you. It is what you give yourself, Care of your own health! Follow me to  learn how you too can and should  be your own advocate,

Example Text
Finally, I was sent home! I might add, without any Rehab, no instructions, no counseling, no dr. appointments, nothing!   I was literally thrown out of the hospital with a no-notice kick in the behind.
I then had to find a doctor since mine had apparently flown the coop and was now unheard of by anyone.
Thus, began the search for an MD who was honest, sober, and not in medicine just for money. The pickings were really slim. I bit the bullet and took recommendations from my insurance company. I consented to a Doctor here in town and could only get an appointment seven weeks out. So I obediently took the meds that would stay down for that additional seven weeks and waited , while still no therapy. There was nothing to do but sleep and try to rehabilitate myself somewhat. During that wait time I did have a Doctor sent by the insurance company for a checkup. He was a delight.
He gave the appearance of not wanting to be there and no information, answered no questions and I was back to square one. I had some rather serious diagnoses from the hospital. They told me I had type II Diabetes and A-Fib plus high cholesterol. My daughter came back the following weekend and she is an assistant director of food services for her state correctional department so, she had some information that was somewhat helpful, like I needed to supplement potassium . She introduced me to coconut water, She also explained more leafy greens were necessary and I could and should eat more eggs. My daughter was wonderful but had to rush back to her job in the next state over. I was still in total confusion. I was trying to nourish my body with a hit and miss technique to control diabetes. Oh yea, the healthcare system truly sucks! No wonder people die! Not from their own choices but from Neglect! Neglect of education, neglect of knowledge of their illnesses and neglect of medical attention!
During that seven weeks I was so close to suicide. Believe me when I say I now understand why suicide happens. You have no where to turn! The hospital has abandoned you, you have no doctor, your family is all gone to work daily, you are on your own. No rehab, no assistance, nothing! The desolation sets in so easily. The daytime sleepiness was a blessing. You could let it take over and not have to face this horrible state for a few hours at a time. The good Lord alone kept my head above that level of death for those seven weeks. I was literally drowning in a sea of desperation and I thank God every single day that he was there when I just wanted to give up. He was there and made me get the strength to fight, and fight I did! That was the most desolate time of my entire seventy six years of life!
After my seven bewildered weeks were up I finally went to the Doctor. That was a wake up call! He had a medical spa and was not at all interested in treating my illnesses and I certainly was not interested in buying Botox injections. I did not care if I looked good at my funeral. Besides, a cosmetologist is included in the price of a funeral. He gave me more meds and told me to go get tests. I left and had a terrible time making an appointment for tests. That is when I called the insurance company and asked to get off this medical merry go round. They found me a Nurse practitioner whom I would see in another month. Now at this time it put me three months out from the hospital release without a doctor. The hospitalist would not refill my meds. There I was, no rehab, no dr. no meds and had to wait a month to see another Provider.
She was quite a piece of work. Again we did not discuss what I could do about my diagnosis and she was happy to prescribe meds for my Diabetes and the newly diagnosed hypertension.
From there I walked into walls, could hardly see, and was scared to eat anything! The next four months I had increased dosages of the diabetes medicine, and three new blood pressure medicines and I was a real mess. Enough was enough! I felt if I was going to die it would be by my choice! I I had my husband put my computer on the desk in the living room and began to research. I uses the Mayo clinic, the university of Harvard. The holistic Medical school , the American diabetes association and the American heart association. I researched all day every day, I called these schools and clinics and asked questions and got answers. I cut my medications in half, I cut my hypertension drugs in quarters. I began to get my eyesight back and I became less dizzy and sleepy. This was September, by December I knew I needed a provider who took a holistic approach. Once again I asked my insurance company for help in finding an acceptable provider. This time I did get a holistic family practice. I was given one of his Nurse practitioners and I held my breath till that first appointment. It turned out she was great! I told her how I split my pills in fourth and they seemed to work better, She prescribed me the same drug at half the dose and was agreeable about cutting it in half. She did some blood work also. Later in the week she called and told me to stop the diabetes medicine, I did not need it . I still monitor my blood glucose twice a day and will continue to do so until I have a full year of 5. A1C. results. Currently, I am working on my hypertension. I did manage to get my cholesterol down and I am keeping it down.
It has been eighteen months since I came home from the hospital. This is what I have learned.
1.Doctors don't care! Some, as in very few might but you have to find them by trial and error.
Ask for holistic based doctors.
2. You and only you can determine your fate. They will let you die if you allow it. You have to be your best advocate. They aren't trying to kill you, they are just trying to make money.
3. No one and I mean absolutely NO one is going to get to the bottom of your medical problem except yourself! Do your research! Do not be afraid to ask questions. Be a real. pain in the ass until you understand!
4. Know your own body and listen to it! Only YOU and YOU alone knows how a drug makes you feel. pay attention to your body! It will tell you what is what. The first Nurse Practitioner I went to actually told me not to lose to much weight because I needed cushion for WHEN I Fall!! That was a red flag! It is not the disease that makes you dizzy and blurry eyed it is the medication! It is the medicine that makes you fall!
5. Don't be afraid to cut a drug in half or not take a whole dose. If something makes you dizzy, makes you sleep, makes you feel out of control, cut it in half., or take a smaller dose. Don't just stop taking a drug, because it will continue with terrible side effects. It is important to only wean off a drug and that is with a Provider's oversight.
6. always research any drug you are prescribed Check online for side effects, black box warnings, what you can not take with it etc. Be aware of what you are taking, always!
7. if you just aren't feeling great check for vitamins you may need. Ask your holistic provider to check your blood.
8. Yes, you have to almost be your own doctor in today's world. Learn all you can about how to be healthy. eating, exercise, supplements and sleep. There are so many scams out there you almost are a sitting duck if you are a Medicare recipient. I will try my best to help others to get the correct actions for the correct results. We need to stick together and perhaps then we can change some of the nonsense going on today.

Until my last hospital stay, I had never heard of any health care providers.

I was still under the assumption of doctors treating patients. Although I will admit most cases I worked were Nursing homes, Elder facilities or families. Somehow along the line Nurses were allowed to go to school for two more years  and in some cases only one more year to become Nurse Practitioners. I am not saying this is a bad thing, Where I came from most Nurses had a BSN and if you wanted to know what was really  going on you asked a Nurse not a Doctor. Heck, even the Doctors would ask the Nurses!  That was the 60's, 70's and 80's. Today is an altogether different scenario.

Today nurses with BSN's can go back to school for one or two years and get a masters in Nursing which allows them to sit for the exam to be a licensed Nurse Practitioner. Just think of that. A doctor of Medicine goes to school for anywhere from ten to fourteen (14) years to become a licensed doctor. Hmm, six years versus fourteen years. Seems kind of lopsided to me. Now I am not saying there are not damn good Nurses out there. Because there definitely are But at the same time. We have young new to the field Nurses vs. veteran nurses who see this as a big money game.  I have seen veteran nurses show Doctors a trick or two. I have also seen new young Nurses make serious mistakes  Mistakes that go to the Morgue.  Don't mistake me, Doctors have sent their fair share of mistakes to the morgue as well.

These new NP providers are just  a gamble. I personally had a Doctor, an NP, and then found a good NP.  But, the first  N.P.  actually told me that although I was a diabetic I needed to not lose too much weight as I needed the cushion when  I fall. I thought that was strange, since diabetics who are obese do need to lose that fat and get fit.  Then I went home and began taking the new medication she prescribed for me, but I soon discovered why she made that remark. I was dizzy, I had blurred vision and was extremely disoriented and unbalanced. Diabetes does not make you dizzy, nor does hypertension give you blurry eyes. The medication does!  Elderly patients do in fact fall. However, it is from the medications not the diseases. Furthermore, when you stop taking the meds you have to wean off of them because they will continue to cause all the side effects for weeks, depending on how long you took them.  Additionally, ALL hypertensive drugs cause dizziness, blurry eyes, tiredness and many more side effects, There is no drug for hypertension or diabetes without serious side effects, So why  would a provider tell you such a fallacy? Simple. They want to keep you dependent on drugs. Let's just be honest. This is my personal findings. The disease does not kill you the medications do. I have used several reputable sites to research all medications  such as the Mayo clinic, the Merck Manual, Harvard university , Hopkins school of medicine etc.

We appear to be getting closer to being a society that does address the causes of diseases . If we can just get all the citizens to start asking questions and taking a much more proactive approach to their own healthcare we may  finally become healthy! My favorite question is, why do we want to suffer so needlessly? Functional Medicine is closer to helping than any other medicine yet it also has it's greed factor and we must be careful. Come on, three hundred and fifty dollars for a doctor to tell you to eat a plant based diet? We are back at the start again!

The next red flag was with this same provider, whom I called because a stronger drug she gave me caused a bad reaction and she snapped that, if I did not want to follow her instructions she would just have to refer me to a specialist. Hmm, I wondered if she gave it any thought of what I would do.  File a complaint, That is what. She knew I was a nurse, she knew I was an Administrator, She knew I was an investigator. She also knew that she was using bad behavior to bully a patient. We must put an end to those kinds of providers, who do more harm than good.

This just seems to me that they are filling the field with far too many possibilities for mistakes, That spells danger for me, but as an investigator I see much more potential for lawsuits. After all Nurses need to have malpractice insurance also. All the Attorneys out there need to wake up, they have a whole  new industry from which to make money and this one will be easier. Join our site later to learn the why and how ,as well as the possibilities.

Nurses being providers have freed up Doctors to make big bucks. They have family Practices with maybe three NP's working for them at a time. That is three times the amount of patients the doctor could see by himself. They all prescribe medicines, especially for high blood pressure and often change the medicine. It is no secret the big pharmaceutical companies are paying kickbacks. These NPs make great money for Doctors. However let's be honest. These Nurse Practitioners are not Doctors, they did not go to medical school. They studied what drugs do for what illness, That virtually is my opinion of the scope of their knowledge in medicine today. Some may get somewhat knowledgeable about some supplements but that is a rare instance.

The Doctors  no longer have hospital privileges if they are in family practice, Patients must use "Hospitalists" .A Hospitalist is a physician who cares  for admitted hospital patients, meaning they only work inside a hospital. These particular doctors have often completed residency training in general internal medicine, pediatrics, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, or oncology. You go to the hospital and are admitted and get a doctor who knows nothing about you, which can be problematic in and of itself. Especially if the patient intake person gave all the wrong information.

Medical records in a bad hospital can cause problems as well.  They tend to lie about elder patients who come in through the emergency room. I  admit that would be so much easier than having to get up from a desk and go into the room and ask the patient or family member the pertinent questions. Now, here is a great reason to complain. That is called falsifying your medical records. I know I sound malicious, but, if you could see how many misdiagnosis and useless suffering  which is caused by these inadequate, so called health information clerks, you would be vehement also. It is  possible that it can even cost lives.

We need to take action to protect ourselves and out loved ones. Medicare has taken steps in this past decade or so to offer more to the Elders. As Elders we need to do our part. When things are wrong, file that complaint. When you have been injured, sue them! You do not always have to sue for a lot. But enough to get it in the case records. Because believe it or not, in my research, who I go to each time, is to look  If they have had a case filed against them several times, then I know that is not a good doctor or  facility, I explain all of that school of thought and the reasoning behind it in my reports. This site is an ongoing project and our  goal is to help seniors find answers to health care problems.

Sometimes you need to sue, sometimes you need to complain in written form to the proper agencies and there are more than one. You will often be told that one complaint will not result in any disciplinary action but, I will tell you this. If a complaint is written well with the correct information and expounds on all steps of the incident or incidents, it will most often result in a suspended license. I will tell you how to do that in my report of complaints. I will tell you how to get results each and every time and why that is important. The medical world is complex, but still requires regulations. Last but not least, When you are used to obtain money by insurance companies who do not give you services outlined in your insurance declaration of benefits, that is Elder Abuse. Why? Because when your insurance company does not provide you with benefits outlined in your declaration of benefits and they keep collecting the premium , that is financial exploitation A felony! Yes you can sue them and it has a four to five year statutory limit.

Elders need to know what to do to advocate for their own health.

In Summary

The is the very first sign you are in a hospital owned by a private equity firm, and run by a management company who really could give a hoot about patient services or healing. In fact, doctors in these types of hospitals no longer have  a concern to heal. They treat symptoms. Because that us exactly what medicine today has become. Big Pharma owns the medical industry.

Let's look at the honest truth. You are now a cash cow for several new fields. Have you ever wondered why Functional Medical doctors are all the rage right now? Research them and find out. I did and I believe personally that, they carry the five basics of good health to many extremes to monitor the practice. But their basic belief is really something we all need to subscribe to/ These new doctors are charging extremely high rates and getting them.

I am half Native American and my father believed in a plant based diet, supplemented with fish, fowl  and only occasionally meat. I reversed my diabetes and stabilized my high blood pressure. It took me ten months to do so, while detoxing from all the drugs of modern medicine,   No, it is not magical, nor a special blend of exotic herbs from the orient. It is good common sense and learning all about the food industry.

I recommend that anyone study all the alternatives. Western medicine has its place, but, through the last several decades, Americans have become placid about their health, Then they want a doctor to give them a magic pill to fix it. No can do , folks! We need to take responsibility for our own health. Once we are diagnosed, we need to research what causes this disease. Then we can take action to treat it at its core. We may still need some medication, but not in the dosages we originally had. In most cases we can get off the medication completely. We just have to get off our butts and change our lifestyles and ways of eating.

  Which brings us to Doctors.

Doctors are literally getting away with murder!

Today if a Doctor, or Hospital. or Nurse, or Technician  or any professional kills a patient, mains a patient, or harms a patient in any way, due to their carelessness, stupidity or just plain negligence, the victim cannot do anything about it. No, the days of holding them accountable are over! Today lawyers are  indeed the gatekeepers of law.  That being said , let me explain. Lawyers feel they have to pay for expert witnesses, private investigators, legal assistants for research and they only get thirty to forty percent of the final award or settlement, plus they pay all the expenses . Since there is a cap on malpractice and the merits of the case will not bring a bountiful amount for the lawyer, then they do not want to take the case. You see, old people are not worth much at all. Children are much too resilient and people in their prime, well, Doctors are always very careful with that group.. When you add the Medicare factor in there well fourteen surgeries a day is any Doctors dream when Medicare is footing that geriatric bill. Now children are about in the same boat because today you have a large percentage of children on Medicaid. so again we have some very profitable surgeries. Heck I have seen twelve Tonsillectomies. in one day all paid for by Medicaid!

Back to our trusty  gatekeepers. Now for those who just don't know, many, many attorneys litigate a few cases to start, it gives them a name. Then they just become " file and wait" attorneys! I was once told by a very successful attorney, "Every single case is worth something". So, they would just file and wait for an offer of settlement. They would get the settlement, take out their thirty or forty percent and the expenses. The victim got what was left.  This is part of the reason I use the noun of victim instead of patient. This is how many attorneys made a whole lot of money. Yea, it was a real piece of cake, such a sweet deal. Today the burden of proof in medical cases is on the victim. Funny how that only works in medicine. Consequently, medical professionals are literally getting away with murder!  It is no wonder everyone wants to be a Nurse Practitioner! Only in medicine can you get rich harming innocent victims, and get kickbacks from the big pharma companies while your doing it!  That is one sweet deal! Except, you CAN do something about it. Oh yes, you can stop these evil , greedy monsters. You can file complaints from the local level to the state and all the way to the federal level. Once you file with Medicare or Medicaid it gets interesting. Oh my, did you know  you get a percentage of what  the department of justice recovers? Do I need to tell you how ruthless that department can be and is? Then you can also bring criminal charges against them. Now, this is an even better deal than suing because you don't have to share your percentage with an attorney! That's right.

Keep  checking back. My reports will be available fie you to see all the places you can file, how to file and how to report Medicare and Medicaid fraud. There will even be tips on getting them prosecuted. You get compensated plus the satisfaction of knowing you stopped them ! Now that is so much  better than making money for a lawyer? But wait it gets better. Did you know if you are over the age of 65 it is Elder Abuse? The anguish, and torment that went with your neglect is Elder abuse.   It's true!  It's about time we all started fighting for our own health and lives.

ABOUT image
This page is all about me and the various levels in my career.
My name is Beverly Slover-Vierra and I had a full life. I was first a nurse and a single mother of five I went back to school and earned my Masters in health-care administration and became an Administrator and finally I needed to find justice for my own dear Mother and learned to become an Elder abuse investigator.
While attending graduate school, I sold Real Estate and learned from the best of the very best. Thus, I have only two skills, Real Estate and Medical, Although I have only two I absolutely mastered both. I dedicated myself day and night to learn all I possibly could. I learned from the best and I wanted to honor their legends by also being the best.
Except for Investigating. This was a new creature and there was not a lot of precedence to follow. But, the fact that it was my own Mother who was killed spurred me into action as I tiredly fought to get a lawyer to take this case. This soon grew into other cases and before I knew what was happening, I was busier than I ever dreamed. I learned how to find evidence and how to find witnesses to volunteer testimony
Along with giving voluntary interviews. I learned how to tape these interviews and get written testimony. I learned how to look in places too obvious to most. I learned to think ahead and find what my attorney needed to win a case, hands down. Why? Because without having this case sewed up for the attorney I would be nothing more than another Gumshoe out there and not very valuable. I worked for the very best litigators and I got the very best evidence, so they went into court with the confidence of knowing they would win. We were a team, I put the evidence together and the attorney litigated. I also had the satisfaction of knowing I was instrumental in getting justice for the victims of Elder abuse.]
I later had the honor of going after family members who financially. Mentally and medically abused my Mother in law. In fact, I wrote a book about that case and it will be available on this site at a later date.
Plus, I spent any and all free time reading Federal and state statutes.
Later I worked for Medicare temporarily in instituting the Medicare part D program. And how it applied to Elders.
If you want to know what to do about abuse, we will be listing my ebooks which have all these answers in them and you will have access to my knowledge, Knowledge such as:
Where and how to complain to whom, and why.
How to know you have a case.
How to recognize the different types of abuse.
How to protect yourself.
What elders need to know about Healthcare today.
Understanding Hospitals and how they work.
Becoming responsible for your own Health care and why you should.
And much, much more!
